“Post” means after, like a Post-Game Report. It's the report after the game. “Human,” as we all know - I hope - is what we are; a living, breathing, operating being that can communicate & use it’s mind to interact with the objects around itself. What does this mean then? Is posthuman supposed to mean “after-human?” I thought the term was a futuristic, sci-fi noun, not a time period. Or maybe it’s another word for cyborg. I understand a cyborg to be a human-machine type organism; a co-relationship between man and robot. Regardless, I'm sticking with the idea that posthuman doesn’t really mean “After-human,” but something that is no longer human, like a cyborg. It’s altered in some way that we maybe don’t recognize it as human anymore.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posthuman
“A posthuman or post-human is, according to the transhumanist thinkers, a hypothetical future being ‘whose basic capacities so radically exceed those of present humans as to be no longer unambiguously human by our current standards.’”
Thank you Wikipedia. So, this is pretty much what I was saying. A posthuman, on their terms, is some futuristic being that is altered in such a way it is no longer deemed human. Now, what qualifies as a posthuman? Could a mermaid be posthuman? It is recognizable as half a human, but what about the bottom half? Are fairies posthuman?
“The difference between the posthuman and other hypothetical sophisticated non-humans is that a posthuman was once a human, either in its lifetime or in the lifetimes of some or all of its direct ancestors. As such, a prerequisite for a posthuman is a transhuman, the point at which the human being surpassing his or her own limitations, but is still recognizable as a human person or similar.”
Hmm. Ok, so it was once human. That would probably eliminate fairies & mermaids. I don’t think their ancestors were ever fully human. Then what about super heroes? I’m thinking they fit the bill since they are still human in a sense, but their powers alter them so much that they aren’t ordinary humans. I know for sure Terminator and Robo-cop would qualify. Surely, Helva from The Ship that Sung would be a posthuman. How about people with prosthetics? They could be gaining a great advantage with the way technology is today.
In summary, the posthuman was once human in either its lifetime or the lifetime of its ancestors and is now altered to incorporate certain advantages that would surpass the normal expectances of a normal human being. Though these posthumans can coincide with humans, they would ultimately dominate the human race because of their skills and abilities.
These two sites offer a further expanation on the topic of posthumans and why we should strive to aim for this goal of becoming a dominate posthuman world.
